Why aren't you blogging???
At some point with doing this blog, I came up with an informal set of rules, one of which was to never write anything negative. It produced a big delay on my blogging as I sorted out what I was capable of saying about WAR, the Washington Area Roadskaters as a club, both positive and negative.
I enjoyed discovering the club. I enjoyed joining and contributing my time and resources as a board member. It was great fun promoting the club and rebuilding the membership records from scratch.
I also enjoyed leaving the club. It was very liberating. Now I can go skate and not have to worry about making all the people who kept placing their demands on me happy. My free time is finally my own again.

ead Skate Lead Andrew, a living encyclopedia of impromptu city skate routes in DC, took charge last Wednesday and led us on some hills and tunnels. Some of us lost him near Union Station and I think we cut the route a little short near the mall.

t's nice to be in season for skating. The perks are pleasant weather and a sun that is still up when we start. We had some new skaters, an international crew spanning the globe from Korea to Brazil. Andrej skillfully led.

irst it was a calm trip along the Potomac then suddenly we were taking the most vertical possible route up through Georgetown. It's a shame the map doesn't show elevation -- for a while I thought that Andrej was trying to kill us. Fortunately, from the National Observatory area onward, we could glide our way downhill back to the Froggy Bottom Pub.

he first route information I put on this blog was the West of Georgetown route which I did up as a cue sheet. We skated it on Wednesday night and I GPSed it. So it's now available on a google map.

t's still before the switchover to daylight savings time so we're still skating in the dark on our night skates. It gave me a chance to experiment with taking some shots with my night time friendly digital camera. None of these photos involved using a flash.
t was a warm evening so we had a good eleven or so people show up. That's a nice change from a typical off season cold winter showing of about six skaters. Jubran led us on a great ad hoc skate. I hope I wasn't the person who was supposed to lead.

ere's a map of the route we took on the Wednesday Night Skate.
lot of skaters have a GPS device with them. At the end of the skate, it gives them information on how far they skated, what their average spped was and such. After I'm done GPSing, I stick it all on the blog.
e meet and start next to the White House. On the map, at the end of the route, you can see the extra portion where we skated to the Froggy Bottom Pub for some post skating nourishment.

he skate season is about to begin. Rollerquest has started scheduling their skates on their website. The Washington Area Roadskaters will soon have their inaugural skate. But the absolute first skate of the 2006 season happened months ago -- on New Year's day. Here are some photos with dates on them to prove it.

put together www.SkateDCWeekend.com on a rainy Saturday in February. In terms of content, I just put down the first thing that popped into my head. The text has improved over time with written feedback from the rest of the organizers.

ere is a long distance event on the Maryland Eastern Shore that sounds like fun as well as a good way to prepare for the A2A. It will be held on June 2nd-4th. You have your choice of several routes and can do up to 140 miles worth of skating across two days.

perfect storm of three unstoppable forces led to a great turnout for a skate on the BWI Airport Trail. The first was the Maryland based skate club RollerQuest listing the event on their web site's calendar. The second was Bill who gleefully instigated a DC presence by posting on the WAR listserv event announcment mailing list. But what made the positive turnout truly irreversable was the gorgeous spring weather that mother nature blew in just for the occasion.

veryone was miserably cold on the Sunday Morning Skate at the Great Esskate as the weather dipped into the 50s in Miami and the palm trees started to droop. We couldn't call our friends for sympathy or moral support -- it was snowing all along the east coast -- Manhattan alone got 23 inches of snow in Central Park -- and a lot of the phone lines were down. The best we could hope for was that our flights home would get cancelled and we would be forced to stay another day. When I got back and mentioned that I missed the snow because I spent the weekend skating in South Beach, nobody believed me.
