I took a trip out to Hains Point to visit the speedskaters. I found something I didn't expect out there. Of course I found the speedskaters. But I found beginner level skaters there too. There were a lot of them. More than I have seen elsewhere outside of an organized group. And it was on a weeknight. Considering how pleasant the location is, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it attracts so many people. On the DC facing side, it offers views of the Washington Marina with boats sailing and motoring back and forth. On the Virginia side, it offers a view of the Potomac which reflects the sunset at the end of the day. Being along the water, Hains Point gets a cool river breeze. It's a perfect place for being on wheels. Roads run along the perimiter of Hains Point and they have been recently paved, making for a smooth ride on skates. The grade is flat. There are no hills to climb. A loop around the island is 3-4 miles long. There is very little traffic and the occasional driver is aware that he/she is sharing the road with joggers, skaters and cyclists. This is perfect for speedskating. It is also a great place for an inexperienced skater to go.
