f you need a good reason to spend time on the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail or the BWI Trail, you can join the Trail Blazers Program, a volunteer group of about 40 enthusiasts sponsored by Park Rangers in Anne Arundal County.
he main focus of this program public safety and visitor assistance. To join you need to:
- become certified in American Red Cross Advanced First Aid and CPR
- ride a minimum of three patrol rides with a Park Ranger
- become familiar with the basics of park operations and public relations
ccording to the brochure, they accept people able to patrol by walking, running, cycling -- and skating.
t sounds like you spend the bulk of the volunteer time on the trail looking at its condition, keeping track of places that might upkeep and helping out people on the trail if needed with directions and such. With requirements like that, the Central Park Skate Patrol qualifies as a volunteer group that does the same thing for Central Park (in addition to providing free braking lessons of course.)
ou can volunteer as little or as much time as you want. To stay active, you need to attend 2 meetings per year. Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Ranger Station which I believe is adjacent to the trail in Severna Park.
