As of 10am, somewhere around 18th and G Streets NW there is a fire. Word on the street is that an underground transformer is burning. The third floor vew we have at work of the NW corner of 18th and G is of smoke coming out of the building there. Streets are closed, the police and secret service are out and none of them are happy. You can hear the sound of fire engines and ambulances and a bunch of them are stopped nearby. There is also a sound like big dump trucks rattling as they go by -- maybe that's the sound of the burning transformer? The air has a burnt electrical component smell. I must have caught sight of the events when they began. Coming back with our coffee, my coworkers and I saw secret service and other police run down G Street. Turning that corner from 17th, we saw smoke or dust in the air and decided to extend our walk. When we fianlly made our way back to our building we saw the smoke whe we looked out a window and heard an intercom announcement about a burning transformer. Having been across the street from the World Trade Center on September 11th, I promptly went home today. There are World Bankers/IMFers on the streets -- plenty of buildings have been evacuated -- no car traffic and lots of foot traffic. I'll leave the picture taking to the reporters because life is too short to be any closer to whatever is going on than I have to. The odd part is that nearly three hours have passed since all this has started and there is nothing about this on the news wires anywhere. There are plenty of people at work who don't seem too concerned about all this but I'm not going back until someone has a definitive answer as to what's going on. Update: In the News... There was a trickle of information by lunchtime. The coast was clear so I went back to work. Here is an article that ran the next day in The Examiner:
